A box grater is a four-sided device with different types of grating surface on each side. The large holes are used to shred cheese. The opposite side has smaller, prickly holes used to zest citrus and grate hard cheeses and ginger. The other two sides are also used for cheeses.
A microplane can be used to grate cheese, ginger, nutmeg, citrus and other foods.
